I love this guy! Ever since I went through knowing God with my good friend and mentor Glen Peterson as a senior in high school way back in 1978!?! I’ve loved J. I. Packer. My wife and I had the privilege of hearing him live at a Desiring God conference on Jonathan Edwards in 2003. He spoke for almost an hour, clearly and powerfully. He was 77.
The longer I live, the more convinced I am with Packer, that the spiritual life is about weakness and dependence, not strength and “success.” Indeed, I would argue that weakness and dependence is success!
1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (HCSB)
When I came to you, brothers, announcing the testimony of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. For I didn’t think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a powerful demonstration by the Spirit, so that your faith might not be based on men’s wisdom but on God’s power.
